Tumble dryer removal starts with a picture. Send a photo of the dryer where it stands, tell us which floor it is on, and we reply by email with one fixed price for carrying it out, loading it and recycling it. Two people come with a van, lift the dryer out of the utility room, kitchen, garage or landing cupboard and put it on board. You pay the figure we quoted once it is on the van.

Every kind of tumble dryer is covered. Vented dryers push damp air out through a hose to a wall vent or a window. Condenser dryers collect the water in a plastic container instead, and heat pump dryers do the same with a sealed heat pump unit inside, which usually makes them a little heavier. A dryer has none of the concrete blocks you find in a washing machine, but it is bulky, the drum shifts as you tilt it and there is very little to grip.

If the dryer sits on top of a washing machine on a stacking kit, mention it when you send the photo. The crew can lift it down as long as nothing is screwed or strapped in place; if it is fixed, have it freed before the day. Taking the washing machine underneath as well? Our white goods collection puts several appliances on one price, and a combined washer dryer is handled the same way.

Appliance Removal is an upper tier waste carrier, licence CBDU526130, registered with the Environment Agency. Councils run bulky waste collections too, but they are booked ahead and the dryer has to be left outside on the day; we take it from the room it is in and aim for same-day or next-day collection wherever possible. Buying a new dryer? Our guide on whether retailers take old appliances away explains what the shop may offer.

How a tumble dryer collection works

  1. Photograph the dryer

Send a picture of the dryer where it is, or fill in the form on this page. Mention the floor, and whether it sits on top of a washing machine.

  2. Receive a fixed price

We email back one figure covering the carry, the loading and the recycling. Nothing is added to it on the day.

  3. Choose a day

Let us know when someone is home and we book the crew. A same-day or next-day slot is offered wherever possible.

  4. Pay on the van

Years of lifting

More than 15 years of experience and 500+ jobs completed. Utility rooms, tight landings and top-floor flats are routine for us.

90% recycled

A tumble dryer is mostly steel, copper wiring, a motor and plastic, and 90% of the waste we collect is recycled.

How a tumble dryer comes out of the house

A tumble dryer is lighter than a washing machine, but it is still a box the size of a kitchen unit with a drum and motor inside and nothing much to hold on to. Two people carry it upright, one at each end, so the back panel and the controls do not scrape the door frames. Dryers often live in tight spots, such as a cupboard under the stairs, a garage corner or the top of a stack, and the crew works out the route when they see it. Heat pump dryers carry a little more weight and are handled with the same care.

To get ready, unplug the dryer and pull it a little way out from the wall if you can. On a vented dryer, take the vent hose off the wall vent or window kit; the loose hose can come with us. On a condenser or heat pump dryer, empty the water container, because heat pump models in particular can still be holding water from the last load. If the dryer is stacked on a washing machine and held with screws or a strap, have it freed first, as the crew lifts it down only when nothing holds it in place. They will not unscrew fixings or take out fitted units, so an integrated dryer needs to be out of its housing already.

After collection the dryer goes to a licensed waste transfer station or treatment facility for electrical waste. The steel casing and drum are recovered, the motor and cables are stripped for copper, plastics are separated and any hazardous parts are taken out and dealt with on their own. A sound working dryer may be passed on for reuse where possible. We can tell you where it went and provide a waste transfer note if you need one.

Tumble dryer removal questions

What do I need to do before you collect the dryer?

Unplug it and, if it is vented, take the hose off the wall or window. If it is a condenser or heat pump dryer, empty the water container. That is all the crew needs to lift it and go.

My dryer is stacked on top of the washing machine. Can you get it down?

Mention the stack when you send the photo. If the dryer sits on a stacking kit with nothing holding it, the crew lifts it down. If it is screwed or strapped in place, have it freed before we arrive.

Do you take the vent hose away as well?

Yes. Once it is off the wall it goes in the van with the dryer. The vent fitting in the wall or window stays where it is, because the crew does not remove fixings.

Is a heat pump dryer any different to collect?

It is collected the same way, but it is usually a little heavier than a condenser dryer, so mention the type if you know it. Empty the water container first, as heat pump dryers often still hold some water from the last cycle.

Can you collect a broken tumble dryer?

Yes. A dryer that will not heat, will not turn or keeps tripping the electrics is collected just like a working one. Working or not, the price comes from your photo.

Will my old dryer be reused?

If it works and is in good condition, it may be passed on for reuse where possible. Most dryers we collect are past that point, so they are taken apart at a licensed facility and the metals and plastics recycled.
