A washing machine is heavier than most people expect, which is why we send two people for every one. Send a photo of the machine where it stands, add a line about the floor and the way out, and we reply by email with one fixed price. That price covers carrying it out, loading it and disposing of it properly. The crew arrives with a van, lifts the machine and takes it away, and you pay the quoted figure once it is loaded.
We collect front loaders and top loaders, freestanding machines and integrated ones that have already been taken out of the kitchen cabinet. Bolted around the drum of almost every washing machine are heavy concrete blocks that stop it shaking itself across the floor on a fast spin. Those counterweights are what make an ordinary machine so hard to shift on your own. If a tumble dryer is going at the same time, put both in the photo and one price covers the pair.
Councils generally run a bulky waste collection that takes large appliances, but it is booked ahead, usually with a wait, and the machine has to be outside on the set day. Getting it there means carrying all that weight yourself. We collect from wherever it is, whether that is a utility room, a kitchen, a garage or a flat on any floor, and aim for same-day or next-day collection wherever possible. Our guide on how to get rid of a washing machine sets out every option, including the free ones.
Appliance Removal holds an upper tier waste carrier licence, CBDU526130, registered with the Environment Agency, and we can tell you where your machine went. It is taken to a licensed facility where the counterweights come out and the steel, motor, cables and plastics are separated, and a sound working machine may be passed on for reuse where possible. The full story is in what happens to your appliance after collection. A combined washer dryer is collected in just the same way.

Why people use us
Licensed waste carrier
Our upper tier waste carrier licence, CBDU526130, is registered with the Environment Agency. A waste transfer note for your washing machine is yours on request.
Insured for heavy lifts
Public liability cover goes up to £5 million and employers' liability to £10 million, so a heavy machine on your stairs is covered.
Crews who know the weight
We have more than 15 years of experience and over 500 jobs completed. Two people carry every washing machine, however short the route.
Recycled properly
90% of the waste we collect is recycled. The steel drum, copper wiring and plastics in your machine are recovered at a licensed facility.
How a washing machine comes out of the house
A washing machine is compact but dense. The concrete counterweights fixed around the drum sit low and to one side, so the machine tips awkwardly when one person tries to lift it. Two people take it from the front and the back, keep it upright on the stairs and carry it rather than walking it across the floor, which protects lino, tiles and laminate. A machine in an upstairs flat comes down in the lift if there is one and by the stairs if there is not.
Before we arrive, the machine needs to be fully disconnected. Unplug it, turn the water off at the valves, take the fill hoses off and pull the waste pipe out of the standpipe or sink trap. Our crew lifts and carries but does not touch plumbing, so if any of it is still connected, book a plumber first and we will collect once the machine stands free. Water always sits in the drum and the sump after a wash, so let what you can drain out, leave a towel by the door and leave the door ajar so the seal is not shut in wet. An integrated machine must already be out of its cabinet slot. You do not need to refit the transit bolts for disposal.
After collection the washing machine goes to a licensed waste transfer station or treatment facility for electrical waste. There the concrete counterweights are separated, the drum and casing are recovered as steel, the motor and cables give up their copper and the plastic parts are sorted for recycling. A sound working machine may be passed on for reuse where possible, though most that we collect have reached the end of their life. Ask for a waste transfer note and we send one.

Washing machine removal questions
Do I need to disconnect the washing machine before you come?
Yes. It should be unplugged, with the water off at the valves, the hoses off and the waste pipe out. The crew does not do any plumbing, so if the machine is still plumbed in, get a plumber to free it and then book us.
Why is my washing machine so heavy?
Most of the weight is concrete. Blocks bolted to the drum keep the machine steady on a fast spin, and they stay inside until it is broken down for recycling. That is why we always send two people.
Do I need to fit the transit bolts again?
No. Transit bolts protect the drum when a machine is being moved to be used again, and yours is going for disposal. Leave them in the drawer or throw them away.
There is still water in the drum. Is that a problem?
A little water is normal and we expect it. Drain off as much as you can, put a towel on the floor in front of the door and leave the door open a crack so the seal does not sit wet. The crew keeps the machine upright on the way out.
Can you take an integrated washing machine?
Yes, as long as it is already out of the cabinet and disconnected. The crew will not unscrew the kitchen unit or the door panel. Ask your plumber or fitter to pull it out first, then send us a photo of it standing free.
Can you collect a washing machine and a tumble dryer together?
Yes. Put both in one photo, or send two pictures together, and we reply with one price for the pair. The crew takes them both in the same visit.
